Summer Safety Tips for Dogs in Australia

Australian summers can be brutal, and dogs feel the heat more than we do. Here are essential safety tips to keep your dog cool, comfortable, and safe during the hot months.

Never Leave Dogs in Cars

Even with windows cracked, a car can reach lethal temperatures in minutes. On a 30 degree day, the inside of a car can reach 60 degrees within 10 minutes. Never, ever leave your dog in a parked car.

Walk Early or Late

Avoid walking your dog during the hottest part of the day (10am to 4pm). The pavement can burn their paw pads — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for their feet. Walk in the early morning or after sunset.

Provide Plenty of Water

Keep multiple water bowls around the house and yard. Add ice cubes on extremely hot days. If you are out and about, always carry water for your dog.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and wobbling are all signs of heatstroke. If you suspect heatstroke, move your dog to a cool area, apply cool (not cold) water, and get to a vet immediately.

Beach and Water Safety

If your dog swims, always supervise them. Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and rips and currents can catch even strong swimmers off guard. Make sure they are wearing a QR Smart Pet ID Tag in case they wander on the beach.
