A new baby is a huge adjustment for the whole family — including your dog. With some preparation and patience, you can help your dog transition smoothly and build a beautiful bond with the newest family member.
Start Early
Begin preparing your dog months before the baby arrives. Gradually introduce changes to their routine so nothing feels sudden. If the dog will no longer be allowed in certain rooms, start that boundary now rather than the day the baby comes home.
Desensitise to Baby Sounds and Smells
Play recordings of baby crying at low volume and gradually increase it. Bring home a blanket with the baby's scent from the hospital before the actual homecoming. Let your dog sniff it and associate it with calm, positive experiences.
Maintain Their Routine
Dogs thrive on routine. Try to keep walks, meal times, and play sessions as consistent as possible. A disrupted routine on top of a new human in the house is a recipe for anxiety.
Never Leave Them Unsupervised
No matter how gentle your dog is, never leave them alone with a baby or young child. Supervise all interactions and teach the child (as they grow) to respect the dog's space.
ID Is Extra Important Now
With doors opening and closing more often, there is an increased chance of your dog slipping out. Make sure they are wearing a QR Smart Pet ID Tag with up-to-date contact information.
