Easter is a time for chocolate, hot cross buns, and family gatherings — all of which can be dangerous for dogs. Here is your guide to keeping your pup safe over the Easter break.
Chocolate Is Toxic
This is the big one. Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs cannot metabolise. Dark chocolate and cocoa are the most dangerous, but all chocolate should be kept well away from dogs. If your dog eats chocolate, contact your vet immediately.
Hot Cross Buns
The raisins, sultanas, and currants in hot cross buns are toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause kidney failure. Keep them out of reach and make sure guests know not to share them with the dog.
Easter Egg Hunts
If you are hiding Easter eggs in the garden, keep your dog inside until all eggs are found. A leftover egg in the garden could be found and eaten by your dog days later. Keep a count of how many you hide and make sure they are all accounted for.
Visitors and Open Doors
Easter gatherings mean people coming and going, doors left open, and excited kids running in and out. This is prime escape time for dogs. Make sure your dog is wearing a QR Smart Pet ID Tag with current contact details — just in case.
Give Them Their Own Treats
Your dog does not need to miss out. Get them dog-safe Easter treats so they can join the celebration without any risk. A special toy or a long-lasting chew keeps them busy while the humans eat chocolate.
