Dog Walking Safety Tips for Night Time

Dog Walking Safety Tips for Night Time

When daylight saving ends and evenings get dark, many dog owners find themselves walking in low light. Here are safety tips to keep both you and your dog visible and safe after dark.

Visibility Is Everything

Wear light-coloured clothing or a reflective vest. Attach a flashing LED light to your dog's collar or harness. If drivers and cyclists cannot see you, you are at risk — no matter how carefully you walk.

Stick to Well-Lit Routes

Avoid unlit parks, bushland, and back streets after dark. Stick to streets with streetlights, footpaths, and areas with other people around. Familiar routes are best — you already know the terrain and hazards.

Keep Your Dog on Lead

Even if your dog has great recall during the day, darkness changes everything. They cannot see hazards, other dogs, or traffic as well. Keep them on a short lead near roads and use a longer lead in safer open areas.

Carry Your Phone

Always have your charged phone with you. It serves as a torch, an emergency contact, and a way to call for help if needed.

Make Sure ID Is Visible

A QR Smart Pet ID Tag can be scanned with a smartphone light even in the dark. If your dog slips the lead at night, visible ID is their best chance of being returned quickly. Pair it with a Classic Tag for double protection.
