Ingredients

  • 1 tin salmon (415g, drained) or 300g cooked fresh salmon
  • 2 medium potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup peas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup carrots, finely grated
  • 2 tablespoons oat flour (or finely ground oats)
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. If using fresh salmon, bake at 180°C for 15 minutes until cooked. Flake and remove any bones.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the salmon, mashed potato, egg, mashed peas, grated carrots, oat flour, and parsley.
  3. Mix well until everything holds together.
  4. Form the mixture into patties about 2 cm thick and 7–8 cm wide.
  5. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  6. Cook the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown.
  7. Place on paper towel to drain any excess oil.
  8. Allow to cool before serving.

Storage

Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Freeze uncooked patties on a tray, then transfer to freezer bags for up to 2 months. Cook from frozen, adding a couple of extra minutes per side.

Nutrition Notes

Salmon provides omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, and vitamin D. Potatoes offer easily digestible carbohydrates. Eggs bind the cakes while adding complete protein. Oat flour provides fibre without gluten sensitivity issues for most dogs.

Tips

  • Tinned salmon with bones is fine — the bones are soft and provide calcium.
  • Make them in bulk on a Sunday for easy weeknight meals.
  • These can be crumbled over regular food as a topper too.
  • Great for dogs that prefer formed food over bowls of mixed ingredients.
