Kangaroo & Rice Elimination Diet Base

Kangaroo & Rice Elimination Diet Base

An elimination diet is the gold standard for identifying food allergies and intolerances in dogs. This kangaroo and rice recipe serves as a perfect elimination diet base — using kangaroo (a novel protein most dogs have never eaten) and white rice (a hypoallergenic carbohydrate). The idea is to strip the diet back to minimal ingredients, wait for symptoms to resolve, then reintroduce foods one at a time to identify triggers. Simple, scientific, and effective.

Ingredients

  • 500g kangaroo mince
  • 2 cups white rice, cooked
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Nothing else — keep it minimal

Instructions

  1. Cook white rice until soft. Set aside.
  2. Cook kangaroo mince in a non-stick pan for 4–5 minutes. No additional oil needed for the meat.
  3. Combine rice and kangaroo at a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part protein.
  4. Drizzle with olive oil for essential fatty acids.
  5. Mix well and cool before serving.
  6. Feed exclusively for 8–12 weeks before reintroducing other foods.

Storage

Refrigerate for up to 4 days. Freeze for up to 3 months.

Nutrition Notes

The elimination diet works by removing all potential allergens and allowing the immune system to calm down. Kangaroo is ideal because most dogs have never been exposed to it, meaning their immune system hasn't developed antibodies against it. White rice is one of the least allergenic carbohydrates. Olive oil provides essential fatty acids without common allergens. After 8–12 weeks on this diet, if symptoms resolve, new foods are introduced one at a time every 2 weeks.

Tips

  • DO NOT add ANY other ingredients during the elimination trial — even treats must be kangaroo-based.
  • Work closely with your vet or a veterinary nutritionist during elimination diets.
  • Keep a detailed symptom diary throughout the trial.
  • If symptoms improve, reintroduce ONE new food every 2 weeks and monitor for reactions.
  • Common allergens to test individually: chicken, beef, dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, lamb.
  • An elimination diet requires strict discipline — even a small cheat can invalidate weeks of work.
