Bone Broth & Rice Gut Healer

Bone Broth & Rice Gut Healer

When your dog's digestive system needs serious healing, bone broth is your most powerful tool. Rich in gelatin, glycine, and glutamine, bone broth literally helps repair the gut lining — making it invaluable for dogs with chronic digestive issues, leaky gut, or recovery from illness. This simple bone broth and rice meal is like liquid gold for the digestive tract — soothing, healing, and deeply nourishing when your dog needs it most.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups homemade bone broth (see tip for making)

  • 200g chicken breast, boiled and shredded
  • 1 teaspoon slippery elm powder (optional, available at health food stores)
  • 1 tablespoon plain yoghurt

  2. Boil chicken breast until cooked through. Shred finely.

  4. If using slippery elm, mix powder with a little warm water to form a paste, then stir through.
  5. Allow to cool, then add yoghurt.
  6. The consistency should be porridge-like — add more bone broth if too thick.
  7. Serve in small, frequent meals.

Storage

Refrigerate for up to 4 days. Freeze for up to 3 months.

Nutrition Notes

Bone broth contains gelatin which coats and protects the gut lining, glycine which has anti-inflammatory effects on the digestive tract, and glutamine — the primary fuel source for intestinal cells. These compounds help repair 'leaky gut' where the intestinal barrier has been compromised. Slippery elm forms a soothing mucilage that coats irritated digestive membranes. Yoghurt probiotics support beneficial gut bacteria repopulation.

Tips

  • To make bone broth: simmer bones with 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar in water for 12–24 hours. Strain and cool.
  • The broth should gel when refrigerated — that's the healing gelatin.
  • Slippery elm is a traditional herbal remedy for digestive issues — available at health food stores.
  • For dogs with IBD, this meal can be part of a long-term dietary management plan.
  • Consult your vet if digestive issues are chronic or severe.
  • Bone broth can also be served on its own as a soothing drink.
