Breed Overview

The Rottweiler is a powerful, confident, and loyal working breed renowned for its protective instincts and deep devotion to family. Originally bred to drive cattle and pull carts for butchers in the German town of Rottweil, today's Rottweiler excels as a guardian, service dog, and beloved companion. Despite their imposing appearance, well-socialised Rottweilers are calm, courageous, and surprisingly affectionate with their people.

History & Origin

The Rottweiler is one of the oldest herding breeds, with roots tracing back to Roman drover dogs that accompanied legions through Europe. When the Romans settled in the town of Rottweil in southern Germany, these dogs were used to herd livestock and guard supplies. As rail transport replaced cattle drives in the 19th century, Rottweilers found new roles as police dogs, guard dogs, and draft animals. The breed was officially recognised in the early 1900s and has since become one of the most popular working breeds worldwide.

Appearance

Rottweilers are robust, muscular dogs with a broad chest and powerful build. They have a distinctive black coat with clearly defined rust to mahogany markings on the cheeks, muzzle, chest, legs, and above the eyes. Their head is broad with a well-defined stop, and their expression is alert and noble. The coat is straight, coarse, and of medium length with a dense undercoat. Males are noticeably larger and more heavily boned than females.

Temperament & Personality

Rottweilers are confident, steady, and fearless dogs that form incredibly strong bonds with their families. They are naturally protective without being unnecessarily aggressive, making them excellent guardians. With their family, Rottweilers are affectionate, playful, and often surprisingly gentle. They tend to be reserved with strangers but warm up once properly introduced. Rottweilers are intelligent and eager to work, thriving when given a sense of purpose.

Exercise & Activity Needs

Rottweilers need a solid amount of daily exercise — around 1 to 2 hours of physical activity including walks, runs, and play sessions. They enjoy activities that engage both body and mind, such as obedience work, tracking, carting, and agility. Without adequate exercise, Rottweilers can become restless and may develop unwanted behaviours. Swimming and hiking are also excellent outlets for their energy.

Training Tips

Rottweilers are highly intelligent and respond best to firm, consistent, and positive training methods. Early socialisation is essential to ensure they grow into well-adjusted adults. They are eager to please and learn quickly, but can be strong-willed, so confident leadership is important. Harsh training methods are counterproductive — patience and rewards-based training build the best relationship. Puppy classes and ongoing obedience training are strongly recommended.

Grooming & Care

Rottweiler grooming is relatively low-maintenance. Their short double coat benefits from weekly brushing to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils. They shed moderately year-round with heavier seasonal shedding in spring and autumn. Bathe as needed, typically every 6–8 weeks. Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care should be part of the routine. Pay attention to their facial folds and check for any skin irritation.

Health & Common Conditions

Rottweilers are generally healthy but can be prone to certain conditions including hip and elbow dysplasia, aortic stenosis (a heart condition), osteosarcoma (bone cancer), and cruciate ligament injuries. Bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus) is also a risk in deep-chested breeds. Regular veterinary check-ups, maintaining a healthy weight, and appropriate exercise during growth periods are important for long-term health. Responsible breeders screen for hip, elbow, heart, and eye conditions.

Diet & Nutrition

Rottweilers thrive on a high-quality diet appropriate for their age, size, and activity level. Large-breed formulas are recommended, especially during puppyhood, to support controlled growth and joint health. Feed two measured meals per day rather than free-feeding to help prevent bloat. Avoid excessive calcium supplementation in puppies. Fresh water should always be available, and treats should be given in moderation.

Living Conditions

Rottweilers do best in homes with a secure yard where they can move freely. They are not well-suited to apartment living due to their size and exercise needs. They are adaptable to various climates but should have shelter from extreme heat or cold. Rottweilers are family-oriented dogs that want to be close to their people — they should not be left isolated in a yard. A confident, experienced owner who understands the breed is ideal.

Fun Facts

  • Rottweilers were originally known as 'Rottweil butcher's dogs' because they guarded and herded livestock for butchers.
  • They were among the first breeds used as guide dogs for the blind.
  • Rottweilers have one of the strongest bite forces of any domestic dog breed.
  • The breed nearly went extinct in the mid-1800s before being revived by dedicated breeders.
  • Rottweilers are natural 'leaners' — they often lean their body against their favourite people as a sign of affection.
