Breed Overview
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a charming, curly-coated Italian breed originally developed as a water retriever and now famous as the world's premier truffle-hunting dog. These adorable, teddy-bear-like dogs combine a working heritage with a gentle, affectionate temperament that makes them wonderful family companions. Their hypoallergenic coat, moderate size, and loving nature have seen their popularity soar in recent years.
History & Origin
The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient breed from the Romagna region of northeastern Italy. Originally bred as water retrievers for waterfowl hunting in the marshlands of Comacchio, they are considered the ancestor of all modern water dog breeds. When the marshlands were drained in the late 1800s, the Lagotto's role shifted to truffle hunting, for which their excellent nose and eagerness to dig made them perfectly suited. The breed nearly disappeared in the mid-1900s but was revived by dedicated Italian breeders in the 1970s.
Appearance
Lagotto Romagnoli are medium-sized, well-proportioned dogs covered in a distinctive thick, curly, woolly coat. Their coat forms tight curls all over the body, including the face where it creates an endearing bushy beard, eyebrows, and moustache. They have large, round, expressive eyes in shades of dark yellow to brown, and triangular ears covered in curly hair. Their body is sturdy and athletic, built for swimming and digging. Their overall appearance is irresistibly cute — like a living teddy bear.
Temperament & Personality
Lagotti are affectionate, loyal, and keen dogs with a gentle, easygoing temperament. They are devoted to their families and form strong bonds with all household members. They are excellent with children and generally friendly with other dogs. While not aggressive, they can be initially reserved with strangers. They are intelligent and eager to please, with a natural desire to work. Their calm, adaptable nature makes them comfortable in various situations. They love to dig — it is deeply instinctual — and they have an exceptional sense of smell.
Exercise & Activity Needs
Lagotti need moderate daily exercise — around 45 to 60 minutes. They enjoy walks, swimming, interactive play, and especially nose work activities that engage their powerful sense of smell. Truffle hunting or scent detection games are ideal. They also enjoy agility and retrieving games. They are not hyperactive dogs but need consistent activity and mental stimulation to stay happy. Their love of water makes swimming a favourite activity.
Training Tips
Lagotti are intelligent and responsive, making them very trainable with positive methods. They are eager to please and enjoy learning new tasks. Early socialisation helps develop their naturally friendly temperament. Their strong digging instinct should be channelled rather than discouraged — provide a designated digging area or use nose work training. They excel in scent detection, obedience, and agility. Consistent, reward-based training produces excellent results.
Grooming & Care
The Lagotto's curly coat requires regular maintenance to prevent matting. Brush or comb through the coat several times a week. The coat does not shed but continues to grow, requiring trimming or clipping every few months. Some owners keep the coat short for easier maintenance. The coat should not be brushed out to be fluffy — it should maintain its characteristic curls. Regular ear cleaning is important, as hair grows inside the ear canal. Dental care and nail trimming are essential.
Health & Common Conditions
Lagotto Romagnoli are generally healthy dogs with an impressive lifespan. Some conditions to be aware of include hip dysplasia, juvenile epilepsy (benign epilepsy of Lagotto Romagnolo, which puppies usually outgrow), storage disease, and eye conditions. Responsible breeders test for genetic conditions. Their generally robust health and long lifespan are among the breed's many attractions. Regular veterinary check-ups help maintain good health.
Diet & Nutrition
Feed your Lagotto a high-quality diet appropriate for their age and activity level. As a medium-sized breed with moderate activity needs, they do well on standard adult formulas. Divide meals into two portions daily. Monitor weight — their curly coat can hide changes in body condition. Some Lagotti may have food sensitivities. Fresh water should always be available.
Living Conditions
Lagotti adapt well to various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation. They are calm enough for indoor living and their non-shedding coat is a bonus. A yard with a designated digging area is ideal. They should live indoors with their family. They are sensitive to extreme heat. They are well-suited to multi-pet households and homes with children.
