Breed Overview

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and one of the most charming toy breeds you will ever meet. These small, sturdy dogs are covered in a gorgeous silky coat and are known for their outgoing, affectionate personality. Often called the Velcro dog for their devotion to their owners, Havanese are playful, intelligent, and incredibly social. They bring Cuban warmth and joy into every home they enter.

History & Origin

The Havanese descends from small companion dogs brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers in the 1600s. These dogs, likely related to the Bichon family, adapted to the Cuban climate and developed into a distinct breed. They became favourites of Cuban aristocracy and were called the Blanquito de la Habana (White Dog of Havana). During the Cuban Revolution in 1959, a small number of Havanese were brought to the United States by fleeing families. From this tiny foundation of about 11 dogs, the modern Havanese breed was rebuilt. They have since become popular worldwide.

Appearance

Havanese are small, sturdy dogs with a profuse, silky coat that flows as they move, giving them a distinctive springy gait. Their coat can be wavy or curly and comes in virtually every colour and pattern. They have large, dark, expressive eyes, dropped ears covered in long hair, and a plumed tail that curves over the back. Despite their abundant coat, they are well-muscled and surprisingly sturdy for their size. Their overall expression is one of alertness and warmth.

Temperament & Personality

Havanese are outgoing, happy, and incredibly people-oriented dogs. They form intense bonds with their owners and want to be with them at all times — hence the Velcro dog nickname. They are naturally friendly with everyone, including strangers, children, other dogs, and cats. Havanese are playful and clownish, often performing tricks and antics to entertain their families. They are sensitive to their owner's moods and make excellent emotional companions. Despite their small size, they are not fragile or nervous — they are confident and sturdy little dogs.

Exercise & Activity Needs

Havanese have moderate exercise needs for a toy breed — around 30 to 45 minutes of daily activity. They enjoy short walks, play sessions, and indoor games. They are active and playful but not hyperactive. Mental stimulation through training and puzzle toys keeps them happy. They adapt well to their owner's activity level. Havanese enjoy agility and rally at their size level. They should not be over-exercised in hot weather.

Training Tips

Havanese are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable for a toy breed. They respond wonderfully to positive reinforcement and love learning tricks. They can be trained in obedience, agility, and even some therapy work. Early socialisation enhances their natural confidence. House training may require patience and consistency, as with many small breeds. They are sensitive dogs that respond poorly to harsh corrections — keep training positive and fun.

Grooming & Care

The Havanese coat requires significant grooming commitment. Daily brushing is needed to prevent mats and tangles in their silky coat. Many pet owners opt for a shorter puppy clip for easier maintenance, which requires professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Show dogs wear their coat long and flowing. Regular bathing every one to two weeks keeps the coat clean and healthy. Clean the face daily to prevent tear staining. Regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care are essential.

Health & Common Conditions

Havanese are generally healthy with a good lifespan for a small breed. Some conditions to watch for include patellar luxation, hip dysplasia (even in small dogs), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), cataracts, heart murmurs, and liver shunts. Chondrodysplasia (a skeletal condition) can also occur. Responsible breeders screen for these conditions. Regular veterinary check-ups and dental care help maintain good health throughout their long lives.

Diet & Nutrition

Feed your Havanese a high-quality small-breed diet appropriate for their age and activity level. Small breed formulas with appropriately sized kibble are ideal. Divide meals into two to three portions daily. Be careful not to overfeed — their fluffy coat can hide weight gain. Monitor treats during training and use small, low-calorie rewards. Some Havanese can be picky eaters. Fresh water should always be available.

Living Conditions

Havanese are excellent apartment and city dogs. Their small size, moderate exercise needs, and adaptable nature make them perfect for various living situations. They are sensitive to extreme heat and cold and should be primarily indoor dogs. They do not do well being left alone for long periods — they are companion dogs through and through. They are quiet enough for apartment living, though they will alert bark when someone comes to the door.
