Breed Overview

The Fox Terrier is a spirited, fearless little dog with a big personality. Available in two distinct varieties — Smooth and Wire — these energetic terriers were originally bred to bolt foxes from their dens during hunts. Today they are lively, entertaining companions known for their intelligence, determination, and playful antics. Fox Terriers pack more personality per kilogram than almost any other breed.

History & Origin

Fox Terriers have a long history in England dating back to at least the 1700s, when they were bred to accompany foxhound packs and flush foxes from their underground dens. The Smooth Fox Terrier is the older of the two varieties, while the Wire Fox Terrier was developed slightly later. Both became enormously popular during the Victorian era and into the early 1900s. The Wire Fox Terrier has won more Best in Show titles at Westminster than any other breed. Though less common today, they retain a devoted following.

Appearance

Fox Terriers are compact, well-balanced dogs with an alert, ready-for-action appearance. The Smooth variety has a hard, dense, flat coat, while the Wire has a dense, wiry, twisted texture with a soft undercoat. Both varieties share the same build — a short back, straight legs, and a head that narrows gradually toward the eyes. Their V-shaped ears fold forward, and their dark eyes sparkle with intelligence and mischief. The tail is traditionally set high and carried upright.

Temperament & Personality

Fox Terriers are bold, confident, and endlessly entertaining. They are quick-witted, curious, and always ready for adventure. These dogs are loyal and affectionate with their families but can be independent and sometimes stubborn. They have a strong prey drive and will chase small animals given the chance. Fox Terriers are alert watchdogs who will bark to announce visitors — and many other things. They are playful companions who love interactive games and can be quite the comedians.

Exercise & Activity Needs

Fox Terriers need moderate daily exercise — around 45 to 60 minutes. They enjoy brisk walks, play sessions, and exploring. Their terrier instincts mean they love to dig and investigate, so supervise outdoor time. Interactive toys and puzzle games help burn mental energy. Despite their small size, they have plenty of stamina and can keep up with active families. A tired Fox Terrier is a better-behaved Fox Terrier.

Training Tips

Fox Terriers are intelligent but can be stubborn, requiring patient, consistent training. They respond well to positive reinforcement but will quickly become bored with repetitive exercises. Early socialisation is important to manage their feisty terrier temperament. Teach a reliable recall early, as their prey drive can override commands. They excel in earthdog trials, agility, and obedience when properly motivated. Firm but fair boundaries help channel their independent spirit.

Grooming & Care

Grooming needs differ between varieties. Smooth Fox Terriers need weekly brushing and occasional baths. Wire Fox Terriers require hand-stripping several times a year to maintain proper coat texture, along with regular brushing. Many pet owners opt for professional grooming for Wire coats. Both varieties need regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care. Neither variety is a heavy shedder when properly groomed.

Health & Common Conditions

Fox Terriers are generally healthy dogs. Some conditions to watch for include patellar luxation, lens luxation, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, deafness, and various eye conditions. The Wire variety may be prone to skin allergies. Responsible breeders screen for genetic conditions. Regular veterinary check-ups, dental care, and maintaining a healthy weight help ensure a long, active life.

Diet & Nutrition

Feed your Fox Terrier a high-quality diet appropriate for their size and activity level. As small, active dogs, they need nutrient-dense food but are prone to weight gain if overfed. Divide meals into two portions daily. Be cautious with treats during training — use small, low-calorie rewards. Monitor their weight regularly, as excess weight puts strain on their small joints. Fresh water should always be available.

Living Conditions

Fox Terriers can adapt to apartment living if they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation. They need a secure yard if given outdoor access, as they are escape artists who can dig under or jump over fences. They are active indoor dogs who enjoy having space to play. Fox Terriers can coexist with other dogs but may not be suitable for homes with small pets due to their strong prey drive. They prefer to be involved in family activities.
