Breed Overview

The Chinese Crested is one of the most distinctive and eye-catching toy breeds, coming in two dramatically different varieties: the Hairless (with silky hair on the head, feet, and tail only) and the Powderpuff (fully coated with a soft, flowing double coat). These elegant, playful dogs are deeply devoted to their owners and have a gentle, loving temperament. Chinese Cresteds are true companion dogs that thrive on human contact and will captivate you with their unique beauty and affectionate nature.

History & Origin

Despite the name, the Chinese Crested likely originated in Africa where hairless dogs were common, with Chinese traders then adopting and breeding them as ratters on their ships. Chinese sailors traded the dogs at ports worldwide, spreading the breed globally. Hairless dogs have appeared in art and writings from many cultures throughout history. The breed gained popularity in the United States in the 1880s through journalist Ida Garrett and breeder Debra Woods. The AKC recognised the breed in 1991.

Appearance

Chinese Cresteds come in two striking varieties. The Hairless has smooth, soft skin on the body with a crest of flowing hair on the head, plume on the tail, and socks of hair on the feet. The Powderpuff has a full double coat of soft, silky hair covering the entire body. Both varieties can appear in the same litter. They have a fine-boned, elegant build with a wedge-shaped head, large erect ears, and almond-shaped dark eyes with an alert, happy expression. They move with a lively, agile gait.

Temperament & Personality

Chinese Cresteds are affectionate, playful, and deeply bonded to their owners. They are gentle, sensitive dogs that thrive on human companionship and hate being alone. They are lively and entertaining with a playful, sometimes clownish personality. They can be reserved with strangers but are not aggressive. Chinese Cresteds are emotionally attuned and make excellent therapy dogs. They are generally good with other pets and children when raised together. They have a cat-like tendency to perch in high spots and enjoy warmth.

Exercise & Activity Needs

Chinese Cresteds have moderate to low exercise needs. A couple of short walks daily plus indoor play sessions are usually sufficient. They enjoy interactive games, agility at a small-dog level, and learning tricks. The Hairless variety should not be exposed to prolonged direct sunlight without protection. They are adaptable and will match their activity to their owners lifestyle. Mental stimulation through training and puzzle toys keeps them engaged and happy.

Training Tips

Chinese Cresteds are intelligent, eager to please, and very trainable. They respond well to positive reinforcement with treats and praise. They are sensitive dogs that require gentle handling — harsh corrections will cause them to become fearful. Early socialisation helps build confidence. They can be trained to a high level of obedience and enjoy trick training. Housetraining may require patience with small breeds — crate training is recommended. They thrive on the bonding that training provides.

Grooming & Care

Grooming differs significantly between varieties. Hairless Cresteds need regular skin care including moisturising, sunscreen application before outdoor exposure, and bathing every one to two weeks to prevent acne and skin issues. Their skin is vulnerable to sunburn and irritation. Powderpuffs need daily brushing to prevent matting of their soft double coat. Both varieties need regular dental care (Hairless Cresteds often have dental issues). Nail trimming and ear cleaning are important for both types.

Health & Common Conditions

Chinese Cresteds can be prone to dental issues (particularly the Hairless variety, which may have fewer teeth or dental abnormalities), patellar luxation, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, progressive retinal atrophy, and skin conditions (in Hairless dogs). The Hairless variety is prone to sunburn, acne, and blackheads. They can be sensitive to cold and certain fabrics against their skin. Regular dental check-ups are especially important. Choose a breeder who screens for eye and knee conditions.

Diet & Nutrition

Feed a high-quality toy-breed dog food appropriate for their age and activity level. Most adult Chinese Cresteds need about a quarter to one cup daily, divided into two meals. The Hairless variety may have dental challenges that affect their ability to eat hard kibble — moistened food or small kibble may be necessary. Monitor weight carefully. High-quality protein supports skin and coat health. Some may benefit from supplements for skin health, particularly the Hairless variety.

Living Conditions

Chinese Cresteds are excellent apartment dogs. Their small size, moderate exercise needs, and quiet nature make them ideal for city living. They must live indoors and close to their people. The Hairless variety needs protection from sun, cold, and rain. They need warm clothing in cool weather. They do not do well left alone and can develop separation anxiety. A calm, warm home where they receive plenty of attention is ideal. They are perfect for owners who want a truly devoted companion.
