The Boykin Spaniel is a versatile, cheerful sporting dog that is the official state dog of South Carolina. History & Origin

The Boykin Spaniel originated in South Carolina in the early 1900s when a small stray spaniel was found near a church in Spartanburg. The dog showed exceptional hunting instincts and was sent to Whit Boykin, a noted sportsman, who developed the breed by crossing with Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Springer Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels, and American Water Spaniels. The breed was specifically sized to fit in small boats used for hunting in South Carolinas swamps. They were recognised by the AKC in 2009.

Appearance

Boykin Spaniels are compact, sturdy dogs with a rich liver or dark chocolate coat that is flat to slightly wavy with moderate feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and belly. They have expressive amber or yellow-brown eyes, long pendant ears, and a friendly, alert expression. Their body is well-proportioned and built for both land and water work. They have webbed feet for swimming and a docked or naturally short tail. Their overall appearance is that of a capable, energetic sporting dog.

Collie eye anomaly has also been found in the breed. DNA tests are available for several breed-specific conditions. Responsible breeders test for these conditions. Regular veterinary check-ups and maintaining a healthy weight help support their overall health and longevity.

Diet & Nutrition
