The Australian Terrier was developed in Australia in the early 19th century by crossing several British terrier breeds including the Rough Coated Terrier, Dandie Dinmont, Yorkshire, and Cairn Terrier. They were bred to control rats and snakes on farms and in mines, and also served as watchdogs and companions. The breed holds the distinction of being the first native breed to be recognised and shown in Australia, receiving official recognition in 1868. They were recognised by the AKC in 1960.

Appearance

Australian Terriers are sturdy, low-set dogs with a rough, harsh outer coat about 6 centimetres long and a soft, short undercoat. The coat forms a distinctive ruff around the neck and a topknot of softer hair on the head. They come in blue and tan, sandy, or red colours. They have small, dark, keen eyes, small pointed erect ears, and an alert, spirited expression. Their body is longer than tall with a level topline and docked or natural tail carried erect.
